About this collection

One hundred and thirty-four hand-written letters by Chester W. Nimitz to his father, mother and grandfather comprise this collection. The letters cover his early childhood years in Kerrville, his years at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, and the first few years of his career as an officer. In many of the letters, Nimitz relates information about his progress as a student and his standing in his classes. Once he arrives on Asiatic Station aboard the USS Ohio (BB-12), his letters describe his activities as a young officer. These letters provide insight into the character and personality of Nimitz as a young man.
